Amazing
Arboretum
Dawyck Estate near Peebles in the Scottish borders has had a history
of tree planting and collecting for over 300 years. It has been associated
with some of Scotland’s greatest plant hunters including David
Douglas, Archibald Menzies and Ernest Wilson. This has led Dawyck to
become recognised as one of the finest arboretums in the world and now
that its ownership has passed into the care of the Royal Botanic Garden
Edinburgh (RBGE) its premier status has been further enhanced and developed.
Profiles
in Arboriculture
Dave Dowson has spent much of his 33 years in arboriculture trying to
raise standards within the profession from an arboricultural and educational
perspective.
Rigging
Research
Article two in the series by Treevolution, in conjunction with Brudi
& Partner TreeConsult (Germany), promoting the findings of the recent
research project: An evaluation of current rigging and dismantling practices
used in arboriculture. The research was published in 2008 and is available
on the HSE website (www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/RR668.htm).
Trees
in the mind of a mathematician
Arborists are biologists or environmentalists, so when treated to trees
as seen through the eyes of a mathematician and mechanical engineer,
you can expect something different and special. And that was just what
delegates to the ‘Prof. Dr. Claus Mattheck Seminar’, organised
by Symbiosis Consulting and held at the Fielder Conference Centre in
Hatfield, Hertfordshire, got on 18 May 2010. Dr Terry Mabbett reports.
