Chippers - Market
Round Up - May 2008
Woodchippers vary in size, from machines that can chip large diameter
roundwood with outputs of over 100 tonnes per hour, to the small,
hand-fed chipper for dealing with arboricultutal waste. Chipping can
be carried out at any stage – on site or at a fixed location,
but there are many features to consider before buying.
AT Osborne
AT Osborne are agents for the TP range of woodchippers. The smallest
in the range, the TP100, is a drum chipper with vertical funnel. With
a compact design, the machine provides
fast and efficient chipping of branches up to 100mm in diameter. The
TP250 is a disc chipper with hydraulic feed. Effective for cleaning
up and chipping branches up to 250mm in diameter, this machine provides
flexibility and large capacity. The large rotor disc with three knives,
combined with three anvils, a 90 degree cutting angle and two horizontal
rollers, ensure effective chipping of everything from thin branches
to entire trees. At the top end of the range, aimed at professional
forestry users, are the TP230, 270 and 280 series.
The angled cutting angle on the forestry series results in larger
chips. The knives can be adjusted for different chip sizes and sliver
breakers (standard on the 230 and 270)
ensure a uniform chip quality. The professional touch of the TP280
is apparent both in the list
of standard equipment, the high capacity of approx 50 cubic metres
per hour, and the good chip quality. The TP280 is delivered with a
stress control system whereby the user can operate the feeding system
and at the same time monitor the rpm on the rotor and the feed rollers.
A large range of additional accessories is also available. AT Osborne

Europe Recycling
Europe
Recycling offers a large range of Woodsman chippers. The smallest
chipper, the Woodsman 12X, will take complete trees up to a roundwood
diameter of 33cm and the biggest model, the 337-FC, has a feed capacity
of 61cm roundwood. The chipping drum has two knife pockets which give
two full cuts per revolution, covering the complete width of the drum.
The result is a very high quality chip with lots of application possibilities
including biofuel. Woodsman chippers have an automatic reversing feed
system that controls the intake of material. It protects the chipper
from overloading and reverses material when necessary. With this system
the chipper drum always maintains the necessary rpm needed to produce
a high quality chip. The 15X and 20X models have infeed capacities
of 41cm and 56cm. Whilst both can be engine-powered (140 and 400hp
respectively) the 15X also has a pto option. The complete range of
Woodsman chippers is available with a large number of options, such
as an infeed table, pto, crane (with or without cabin) and remote
radio control.

Fuelwood (Warwick) Ltd
Heizohack
chippers from Fuelwood are available in four capacities, 300, 400,
500 and 800mm; each machine is available in various widths. Heizohack
drum chippers produce a controlled chip size, have a big appetite
with a large in-feed and work with low-powered tractors. Powerful
in-feed conveyors combined with a large diameter top roller, both
with welded spikes, provide constant controlled feed right up to the
chipping drum. The chipping drum has a number of small blades that
can be sharpened in situ or quickly exchanged. A centrally positioned
clamp-screw makes the changing of the cutting knives simple and fast.
Chips pass
through the screen or are automatically recycled within the chipper.
Screens regulate the chip size, making them ideal for auger feed chipheating
systems, and can be changed to suit specification very quickly. An
auger transfers the screened chip to the out-feed directional blower.
The chipper uses a stress-control system, which allows it to be driven
from tractors of varying power ratings. The smallest hand-fed machine,
the HM4-300, has a capacity of 30cm (12”) and is available in
two opening widths. The 400 range (16”) starts with a 5-cutter
model with opening of 450mm, up to an 8-cutter model with 690mm opening.
There are also remote controlled crane feed models with long feed
intakes, and hydraulic raise, lower, rotate and direction controls
for the output chute. A two-wheeled chassis or a highspeed four-wheeled
chassis are available on the 300 range. Because of the weight it is
recommended that the 400 range are chassis-mounted (various options
available). Also available from Fuelwood, Laimet chippers incorporate
a unique and patented system of auger feed.
This system is simple and relatively quiet in operation and by changing
the pitch of the auger helix (also known as spiral blade or conical
screw blade), the chip size can be varied. The smallest unit in the
Laimet range is the HP21 model, with a capacity of 17cm and requiring
ideally 100hp (75kW). The power requirement is high, but so is the
output. The HP25 model is a crane-fed machine with a capacity of 23cm
and a potential output of up to 120 cubic metres an hour. The HP35
requires an independent drive of 270hp (200kW) and has a capacity
of 28cm. The largest HP50 has a capacity of 50cm, requires a mininum
of 680hp (500kW) driving power and is ideal for on-site chipping operations.
Various drive options are available, together with models for chipping
sawmill waste. Laimet have a self-contained unit with a large silo
and vibrating conveyor linked to the model HP25 chipper, primarily
for sawmill waste, driven by tractor and requiring 160hp (118kW).

optional extras are available, including radio remote control and
tracks. Larger disc or drum machines are also available from 15 to
35 inches. Global Recycling 017764 986912 www.globalrecycling.eu
GreenMech
GreenMech have launched a new compact professional chipper called
the GMR-100, a unit that shares a lot of the design principles that
you would expect from a larger machine. This new chipper follows the
increased pressures being placed on businesses to process their timber
waste rather than burn it. At only 720mm wide, this compact chipper
can easily be pushed or towed through the tightest of places so that
the operator can ‘chip on the spot’. The GMR-100 has an
in-feed chute measuring 550 by 435mm, making it ideal for reducing
armfuls of hedge and shrub trimmings, and it can take material up
to 100mm with ease. With an appetite of up to 5 cubic metres per hour,
this machine will save time and money on many landscaping jobs. With
a weight of under 200kg the GMR-100 can easily be pushed into the
back of a van or loaded onto a trailer, making transportation a simple
task. Once on site, the unit can be pushed or, on larger areas towed
behind a garden or compact tractor, to the job in hand. The process
of chipping is carried out by two reversible blades that can be resharpened;
these are mounted on to a steel drum which is powered by a 14hp V-twin
Vanguard engine. Once chipped, the material is sent up and out of
the adjustable discharge chute to the required trailer, bag or direct
to the floor, minimising handling and saving time.

Jas P Wilson
Junkkari
have produced chippers in Finland for many years and have sold over
12,000 units. Wilsons say they are among the most attractively priced
on the market. They are specifically designed to produce woodfuel
from the timber grown by the Scandinavian farmforesters who don’t
like to chip to waste. All of the models produce a quality product
with the minimum of fines and the chip size is adjustable. Three angle-feed
models are offered, of 4”, 6” and 10” capacity.
Two straight-feed models are available of 8” and 10” capacity.
All have hydraulic roller feed and internal pto-powered hydraulics
are an option. The Junkkari HJ260 pictured has the feed opening set
at 90 degrees to the rotary cutting disc. The efficiency of feed can
be adjusted by altering the speed of the hydraulic feed motor. The
feed-roller is equipped with sharp teeth for optimum grip, enabling
the feed flow to be kept smooth. The high capacity of this model makes
it suitable for shared use or even small-scale contract operations.

Tracmaster
The
Camon C50 All-in-One portable chipper from Tracmaster is a tough machine
primarily aimed at the disposal of garden waste including branches,
brushwood and prunings. An important feature of this machine is its
ability to be broken down, by removing the in-feed chute and hiding
the exit chute so that the machine can be easily placed into the boot
of a car. A collecting bag comes as standard and allows the operator
to leave a clean area.
The Honda engine is well regarded for its reliability and the whole
machine has been built with ease of use and durability as its key
focus. The Camon C275 chipper features a hydraulic roller in-feed
system monitored by an electronic no-stress device that not only prevents
the blades being overfed, but also reverses the hydraulic roller for
a fraction of second so that the engine is able to return to full
revs much quicker than it would do without this function. The chipper
is also mounted on a high-speed road trailer complete with full lighting
board. The two chipping blades are fully reversible with only a simple
process being required to open the machine up for access. With a chipping
capacity of 15cm and diesel (27hp Kubota 3-cylinder) or petrol (24hp
Honda V-twin) engine options, this machine offers excellent performance
capabilities. Tracmaster Ltd 01444 247689 www.tracmaster.co.uk
Vermeer UK
The Vermeer BC1400TX is a tracked 15” capacity brushwoodchipper
which is mounted on either steel or rubber tracks. It is equipped
with a wireless remote control unit which enables the operator to
simultaneously load the chipper from a skidsteer or excavator whilst
retaining
control of the machine. It benefits from Vermeer’s patented
Smartfeed System which enhances production and protects the chipper
from becoming jammed. The Cat 304 track chassis enables the machine
to reach areas that wheeled machines find impossible and with the
reduced ground pressure that tracks bring, it causes less disturbance
too. The 122hp Cat
turbo diesel provides this chipper with plenty of power to chip wood
at speeds in excess of 2 feet per second and it can be fitted with
an optional winch above the feed table to pull larger pieces into
the machine without extra trimming to reduce the size. Vermeer UK
also offer the Farmi range of pto driven chippers. Their capacities
range from 160 to 380mm diameter and they have a built-in hydraulic
tank and pump enabling them to run on a wide variety of tractors.
There is an option of a no-stress system to manage the feeding of
larger material, and options for longer discharge chute, chip size
adjustment and twig breakers to give a very high quality end product.
