We are looking for an ambitious and motivated individual who is looking for a rewarding career as a Machine Operator, working on the National Forest Estate. Full training will be provided for applicants without their Forest Machine Operator Certification Scheme (FMOCS) qualification, to enable them to operate forest harvesting machinery.

Our West Region manage approximately 120,000ha of woodland. The region is situated in some of the most spectacular west of Scotland scenery and is characterised by rugged landscapes, high mountains and well defined lochs and glens. There is a wide geographic coverage from Kintyre in the south to Glengarry in the north, as far east as Tyndrum and the Isle of Mull in the west.

Harvesting is divided in to 3 teams each led by a Forester and a Work Site Supervisor. This post will be based within our Mid and South Argyll area of the region.

Purpose of the Job

You will work within a team to plan and carry out tree harvesting as part of clear fell and thinning operations. You will do this by operating both a forwarder and harvester fell trees and extract timber to roadside. You will be required to meet targets in terms of production outputs but more importantly in terms of ensuring all Health, Safety and Environmental conditions are met.

Key Work Areas

  • Undertake tree felling and forwarding operations in clear fell and thinnings areas;
  • Complete all forest operations in line with health, safety and environmental standards using tools such as site management plans and risk assessments;
  • Undertake all necessary maintenance on machines liaising with the workshop as required;
  • Work with the Forester and Work Site Supervisor's to ensure stock control is maintained by measuring roadside and on site timber.
