THE Woodland Trust's UK Tree of the Year winners have been revealed.
The Allerton Oak in Liverpool’s Calderstones Park, believed to pre-date the Norman Conquest of 1066, was crowned England’s winner; a lone elm in Glen Affric, whose remote location has protected it from Duch elm disease, was Scotland’s winner; the Welsh title went to Pontypool’s Old Sweet Chestnut; and the Invisible Tree in Rostrevor was named Northern Ireland’s winner.
Each country’s winning tree will be eligible for a Tree Care award of £1,000.
A panel of experts has also selected England’s Allerton Oak to go forward to represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year competition in February 2020.
