IT’S a job that demands equipment delivers both power and precision. The thinning of woodland and grubbing of trees in urban areas can often be an arborist’s most gruelling task.

Thankfully, there is a “safe and efficient solution”.

The Lumberjack, from GKB Machines, allows the operator to cut through the trunk and transport the tree to a safe area for sorting or processing through a woodchipper.

Combining two operations in one machine the GKB Lumberjack features a grapple, equipped with a hydraulically powered Hardox blade, which can cut through trunks of up to 45 cm (18”). Four orbital engines control a tooth clutch and the movement of the excavator which, depending on the operating width and model chosen, is between five and thirty tons. This excavator provides complete control over the movement and inspection of the trunk through a full 360 degrees.

The powerful cutting blade is concealed within the arm meaning the felling head can effectively function as a sorting machine, with the blade immediately available again when cutting is required.

Forestry Journal:

The range consists of three models; LJ150, LJ300 and LJ450, offering cutting capacity of between 15 cm (6”) and 45 cm (18”), and working sorting widths of 97 cm (38”), 112 cm (44”) and 130 cm (51”) respectively.
