THE Royal Forestry Society Randle Travel Bursary 2023 has been awarded to student Lulu Sleep who is studying a BSc in Forest Management at the University of Cumbria.

Lulu will be volunteering at the Alex Fraser research forest in Canada this summer. She will be involved in forest surveying and developing harvesting prescriptions. She will also assist with the installation of a biomass power plant.

The Alex Fraser research forest was established in April 1987 and is run by the University of British Columbia.

Lulu said: “The visit will involve fieldwork experience which will enrich my knowledge and capabilities. This will allow me to better conduct my forest management dissertation research project next year in the UK.

“I will gain knowledge on forest management techniques used internationally. I can then incorporate those into forestry here. I am interested in techniques to produce forests with greater resilience to climatic changes.”

Applications for the Randle Bursary 2024 will open later this year. Find out more on the RFS website’s ‘grant’ pages.
