PONSSE has confirmed its 'updated global operating model' will come into effect – with jobs expected to be lost at the manufacturer.

The Finland-based firm says it will make the changes from June in order to "ensure even better customer service, strengthen competitiveness, and increase cost effectiveness". Ponsse had earlier this year revealed its current set-up was no longer "sustainable".

Following negotiations at both its headquarters and worldwide subsidiaries, the company says "current positions will cease to exist", putting jobs at risk. While some personnel could be recruited to new roles, not all will be.

Ponsse says it will be May before the full impact is known, but it previously said as many as 140 jobs could go worldwide. It remains unknown if any of the positions at threat apply to the UK.

A statement this week from Ponsse's CEO Juho Nummela read: "The updated operating model and related changes in positions and employment terms were discussed during the recently completed cooperation negotiations in Finland, as well as in various consultation processes with employee representatives in Ponsse’s country organisations, where necessary.

"These processes have now been completed.

"As a result of the updated operating model, part of the company’s current positions will cease to exist, and new positions will be established.

"Resourcing processes for the new positions will be started next week. Potential impact on the personnel will be known in May when the number of employees, who have found new role inside of the organisation is known.

"Additionally, it was negotiated and agreed a possibility for a two-week layoff during 2024 applied to salaried and senior salaried employees in Finland if operating environment so requires."

As part of the shake-up, Ponsse will divide its operations into five market areas from June 1. These will be: 1) Nordic countries and the Baltics; 2) Europe; 3) South America; 4) North America; and 5) Asia, Australia and Africa.
