Of all the many challenges facing foresters, getting to and from their work should be least among them.

With that in mind, Forestry Journal has taken a look at some of the latest utility and off-road vehicles on the market designed to make getting from A to B as easy as one, two, three.

SUZUKI
KINGQUAD

Forestry Journal:

SUZUKI’S ever-popular KingQuad ATVs now come fitted with an enhanced security package as standard courtesy of its partnership with Datatool and Datatag.

The Japanese manufacturer has been working with Datatag and fitting its CESAR forensic marking system for over 10 years, but has now bolstered its security offering by partnering with Datatool to fit a Thatcham-accredited tracking and immobiliser system as well.

The Datatool Stealth S5+ tracker and immobiliser actively protect the ATV against unauthorised movement as well as providing hotwire/forced ignition protection.

Waterproof with a built-in antenna, the Datatool Stealth is a cutting-edge tracking device which benefits from a UK-based 24/7/365 Theft Monitoring Team and is 4G-enabled for superior tracking abilities as well as providing tow-away alerts and key cloning protection. In addition, the Datatool app enables customers to see the location of their ATV in real time as well as journey history so you can see where the vehicle has been used.

The Suzuki range currently comprises three versatile models; the KingQuad 500 and 500XP as well as the KingQuad 750XP (XP denotes independent suspension and power steering).

These robust utility ATVs are the culmination of years of refinement and their high levels of technical specification and ease of handling give riders confidence on any terrain, making them suitable for several applications including hill and lowland farming, estate management and use on equestrian properties.

Suzuki’s position as a leading supplier of ATVs to the UK agricultural and land-management markets continues to be strengthened by this security package and gives owners the peace of mind that everything is in place to deter theft and that it is also possible to track and recover their KingQuad ATV should it be stolen.

Forestry Journal:

In addition to the security package, Suzuki is currently offering a saving of 10 per cent off the RRP of a new KingQuad when customers trade in their old ATV of any make or model (T&Cs apply). This offer is available until March 31, 2024.

HONDA
PIONEER 520

Forestry Journal:

HONDA’s UTV Pioneer 520 combines the benefits of side-by-sides and ATVs, marrying up safety and space found in side-by-sides with the nimble handling and a small, narrow footprint of ATVs.

In 2015, Honda America launched the Pioneer 500, promising a true all-rounder that was as versatile as it was compact. A powerful workhorse, engineers behind the two-seater designed it to stand up to tough off-roading and a wide variety of testing work environments where Honda’s legendary reputation for durability, quality, and reliability is demanded.

The key to the Pioneer’s enduring flexibility and all-round ability has always been its layout. The 520 takes this to the next level with the introduction of a gas-assisted tilting rear bed. Measuring in at useful 29 inches in length, 38.7 inches in width and 9.8 inches high, the ample dimensions can swallow a multitude of items from multiple standard hay bales to buckets, crates and more. The ridged base design, three bed divider slots for ¾” partitions and five D-ring locations ensure the load stays secure regardless of the terrain.

Aiding this load-carrying versatility is a tailgate that folds flush with the bed floor when open and integrates four cup-holders, giving the operator somewhere to sit on a work break, or at the end of a hard day’s work.

Such usability has not come at the expense of durability, with the bed designed to carry loads of up to 204 kg. The one-piece plastic item is hard-wearing and features integrated tail lights for a more modern look. The monocoque shape and design of the rear bed weighs less than traditional steel items, aiding the 520’s handling for those seeking recreational fun.

This highly capable load-lugging capacity is boosted further through an ample towing capacity. Capable of towing 454 kg, the Pioneer 520’s overall load capacity of 658 kg makes it a very useful tool for agricultural and commercial applications.

The V-Cross boasts a 9” multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, an eight-speaker sound system, and distinctive gunmetal grey exterior styling. The AT35 model enhances the V-Cross model with further extreme off-roading capability, featuring elevated Bilstein suspension, 35” all-terrain tyres with widened wheel arches, bigger sidebars, and Arctic Trucks branding across the interior and exterior.

Safety takes centre stage across all models with standard Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), including autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed limiter, and lane departure warning and prevention.

Isuzu’s commitment to safety is underscored by the D-Max’s remarkable achievement of five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, a rarity in the pickup segment. The vehicle further instils confidence with a five-year/125,000-mile warranty and five-year roadside assistance.

With a 3.5-tonne maximum towing capacity, one-tonne payload, and a blend of impressive capabilities, durability, and reliability, the new-look Isuzu D-Max sets a new standard as the smartest, strongest, and safest D-Max of all time.

CAN-AM
OUTLANDER ATV

Forestry Journal:

CAN-AM ATVs have always helped riders get out and do more, from working on the ranch to tackling the trails. As new consumer needs arise, Can-Am is once again pushing boundaries with the all-new mid-cc (medium engine displacement) Can-Am Outlander ATV recreational and utility models. Designed and built with the emphasis on improving the rider experience at every touchpoint for both work and play, the new Outlander lineup offers more performance, comfort, storage and reliability for the category.

Elsa Vilarinho, director, global marketing, Can-Am Off-Road at BRP, said: “This launch is probably the biggest Can-Am ATV launch of the past 10 years! We are excited to offer consumers a best-in-class ATV designed with their needs in mind and how they use the product, from the riding experience to real-world capabilities and our awesome accessories.”

The new recreational Outlander 700 and 500 models, and utility Outlander PRO HD7 and HD5 models, are all equipped with class-leading power, ground clearance, suspension travel, towing capacity, rack capacity and longest maintenance intervals.

The Outlander 700 and 500 are some of the most versatile ATVs on the market, giving riders everything they need for their next off-road adventure.

Engine

An all-new rear-facing 650 cc single cylinder, liquid cooled, fuel injected Rotax Advanced Combustion Efficiency (ACE) four-stroke engine design and configuration are complemented by a new integrated transmission design and pDrive clutch, all of which give the new Outlander platform class-leading power and towing capabilities. Thanks to ECU calibration and different camshaft designs, the 700 and PRO HD7 models have 50 hp and 41 ft-lb of torque, while the 500 and PRO HD5 models have 40 hp and 37 ft-lb of torque.

Chassis

A new tubular steel chassis design derived from the Can-Am Maverick platform and front and rear arched A-Arm suspension configuration, are what have given the new Outlander and Outlander PRO platforms class-leading suspension travel and ground clearance. Both the recreational and utility models are equipped with 9.75” of double A-Arm front suspension travel with twin tube shocks up front, and with 10.25” in the rear. The PRO models feature stiffer suspension tuning to allow for working conditions and heavier payloads. The combination of the chassis and suspension design creates the unrivalled ground clearance, handling, and stability of the new Outlander platform, with up to 13” of ground clearance on certain models.
