Background Information

An exciting opportunity has become available in the Central Region of Forestry and Land Scotland. We are looking for a driven and motivated individual to be a Forest Management and Harvesting Supervisor for our site in Glenbranter. The area that you will oversee expands from Tydrum in the North to Whitlee in the South, therefore we are looking for someone who is up for a challenge and who is keen to take on supervisory responsibility. Furthermore, you will have the chance to represent the Scottish Civil Service to the public and to our contractors. It will be your duty to uphold and represent FLS standards and codes of conduct.

Job description

As part of this exciting opportunity you will play an hands on role in the field, supervising people within your team including staff and contractors. Your role as a supervisor will be a key contributing factor to the United Kingdom Woodland Assurance Standards.

You will supervise a wide range of operational works within the area, including the FLS harvesting programme, which is around 150,00m3 per year consisting of predominantly standing sales timer and Long-Term Contract management. This will be increased over the next 5 years to 120ha of restock programme per year, therefore, we are looking for someone who is looking to the future and who wants to play a prominent role in the contribution to our goals.

The Cowal area has a received a number of Statutory Plant Health Notices as a result of Phytophthora Ramorum. To address this issue the FM, HM Supervisor will work closely with the Forest Management Forester to meet the targets we have set for chainsaw felling of Phytophora infected larch and the clearance of rhododendron. This challenge covers an exciting terrain of steep ground and environmental constraints. Therefore, FLS would like applicant to apply who are forward thinking and able to consider multiple factors when creating and executing a plan.

Responsibilities

• Work with the Foresters and team to plan and execute safe and sustainable forest operations across your work area.
• Monitor ongoing forest operations, ensuring regular communication with direct teams, contractors and merchants.
• Provide a key point of contact for your Forester teams and contractors to communicate effectively with each other.
• Ensure records are kept of site visits, audits and stock control.
• The role requires regularly walking over steep and uneven ground with exposed harvesting debris, which has ground preparation carried out, to mark out sites.
• Delivering plants to site using a Quad Bike and unloading plant deliveries.
