TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOREST OPERATIONS

The Forest Operations Team are responsible for the sustainable management of the Welsh Government Woodland Estate to meet accreditation under UK Woodland Assurance Scheme and ISO14001 and to deliver Sustainable Management of Natural Resources. The team covers management of the Welsh Government woodlands in the Mid-North (East) area from Hafren and Radnor in the south to Welshpool, Dyfnant and Hirnant in the north. These comprise a diverse mix of upland and lowland blocks including Hirnant, Dyfnant, Meifod, Welshpool, The Breidden, Carno, Hafren, Abbey Cwm Hir, Coed Sarnau, Ceri, Radnor, Warren Wood, Presteigne and Nash Wood.


The role of the Technical Support is key in the delivery of annual harvesting, restocking and establishment programmes working closely with external contractors and timber processing companies to ensure that these plans are delivered to time.


General duties of the role include supervision of service contracts and monitoring of Standing sales contracts providing regular written records of site visits in diaries. The individual will report any breaches of contract as well as Health & Safety and environmental incidents. There is an element of stock-taking of roadside timber produce, as well as recording of planting stock and chemical usage. Site surveys will be undertaken to provide management information, such as stocking densities on restock sites, weevil and weed surveys, and thinning control. The monitoring of timber security through regular lorry checks is necessary as well as the deployment of cameras to ensure compliance. The person will assist the wider team in planning and delivery of operations as and when required.


The role has some office-based work but is predominantly site based. Some out of hours working may be required should there be a need to respond to unforeseen incidents on site.

Must have full UK driving licence.



You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of the following:


1. Experience of working in land management disciplines.
2. Knowledge of sustainable forest management, UKWAS and forest certification schemes.
3. Knowledge of forest planning and forest operations.
