TREES AND WOODLAND ADVISER

Location: Ambleside – Permanent f/t (37.5 hrs pw)

Salary: £40,071 pa

Ref: IRC102321

Summary

As the National Trust embraces the future, we are increasing our ambitions to restore nature and step up our response to the climate crisis.

We are seeking to:
• make habitats for nature bigger, better more & joined up
• reach carbon net zero by 2030 not least through the planting of 20 million trees
• increase access to the countryside to enable more people to enjoy the benefits of getting outdoors and feeling closer to nature.

The role of Tree and Woodland Adviser for the National Trust provides a unique opportunity to operate strategically and help to shape the delivery of our woodland establishment ambitions across the land we care for in Northern England and the Midlands. As a key internal consultant you will help to form strategic direction and Trees & Woodlands leadership to our cohort of woodland professionals in these regions who care for some of the most diverse and special wooded habitats and ancient trees in the UK.

This is a special role which requires an individual who can apply their broad experience across forestry and arboriculture to inspire and provide expert guidance to colleagues to ensure the management of our trees and woodlands is carried out to an exemplary standard.

The North & Midlands regions are amongst our most wooded. This provides huge opportunities for creating significant benefits for people, the climate and nature through proactive management as well as secondary benefits from timber income. Equally it presents challenges. The regional teams need to ensure they have adequate compliance and training systems in place at properties to ensure they can deliver these benefits. The T&W adviser is essential to co-ordinating this.

Through great advocacy and consultancy skills there is a significant opportunity to bring a co-ordinated approach across the two regional areas and provide consistency and best practice especially around forestry operations, risk management, funding and certification compliance and deer control.

The North Region in particular has a structure in place in terms of its forestry team and sawmill which allow it to be an exemplar of woodland management which other regions of the trust can benefit from. The T&W adviser is the technical lead for this.

The salary range for this role will be between £40,071 and £45,000.

We will be interviewing for this role in 16th June 2021 initially using Webex or similar
